Bird OneA little girl sits on the edge of a rooftop, her elbows on her knees, with her chin in her hands, watching the crowds below her. She sees little girls dressed in little fairy princess costumes, and little boys in pirate clothes, and sheet covered children who like to think they are ghosts. Part of her is fascinated by this display, but the rest of her is bored at this ridiculous show. Those children do not realize how benevolent the world around them has become. If it had not, those children would not be out tonight of all nights. In the past, parents would spend this night with their children cradled in their arms, hoping that locked doors and shut windows would be enough to keep the spirits away from their little ones. Some parents had known it would not be enough. Those children had special children, children that would be marked for death by their people, if the spirits had not snatched them already.
